EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
