Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.

Officers report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.

Officers then found numerous other vandalized cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Police state initial examinations indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.

Local authorities stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

A senior official said the attack made him speechless and required to be solved promptly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
